Sharks in the Colosseum during a Naumachia, rhino-riding gladiators, senators reading newspapers and drinking coffee (sadly, no Cassius Dio – but then again, incorporating the main historical source from the Severan period while completely rewriting history might have been a bit tricky). Caracalla and Geta are absolutely insane, Macrinus gets heroically defeated by Paul Mescal – this is peak Hollywood. And yet, the film was mind-numbingly boring.

Murnau was unable to acquire the film rights to Bram Stoker's novel Dracula (1897) and moved the plot from England to Germany without further ado - Dracula became Nosferatu. However, the book was an expression of the fears of Jewish migrants from Eastern Europe, who increasingly came to the West after the pogroms in the Russian Empire in the 1880s.
