Jennifer Garner, good as she is, could not have saved this dumpster fire. The messages and humor both stand the test of time, and the mix of cultures, ages, and friendships turn this movie into a believable snapshot of tenement youth. The acting is so lively and expressive that it’s easy to forget it’s a silent film.
