I’m knocking off a star for my bias—any film with Jessica Chastain is already halfway to winning me over. And after Anne Hathaway reminded everyone she was hot in that one film, this was prime fodder for my lesbian brain.
That said, it’s... fine? Jessica and Anne are powerhouse actresses, and they nail the deep despair and primality of protecting their children. Anne is unsettling, with a creepy intensity that lingers throughout.
The pacing is weird—slow at times, awkwardly fast…
The premise had potential, and Nick Cage brought his usual intensity, but it still fell flat. It tried hard to make me care—cancel culture, social commentary, all that—but all I felt was irritation for an unfunny, unsympathetic character. Worse yet, I was bored. I slogged through, and in a few months, I’ll have inevitably replaced the memory of this movie with something more emotionally challenging, like doing laundry.
The Substance feels like it was directed by one of my inner demons. It dives deep into the desperate need to be loved and valued, turning the chaos of self-hatred and destruction into something darkly relatable. Demi and Margaret are fearless, capturing the over-the-top, relentless inner dialogue that so many women know all too well. Absurd, visceral, and disturbingly relatable.
