gorgeous, gothic, and atmospheric, winding through dreary alleyways, decrepit castles, and dark mausoleums. bill skarsgård’s count orlok is a delightfully monstrous, ominous auditory nightmare, with a voice that seems to choke on its own rotting tongue. willem dafoe is another highlight as a cooky doctor and researcher of the occult. lily-rose depp, playing a typical tortured woman, is great at moaning, convulsing, screaming, etc., but falls flat in moments requiring more subtlety. both her character and nicholas hoult’s felt underwritten, and i was not especially emotionally invested in their story.
major props tho to the 5,000 real rats.
