This was a nice attempt at a film about addiction, loss, and adulting. Riz is excellent in the role, especially considering how little he had to work with. The script is inconsistent and vacillates between sentimental and detached. The coach character at the rehab for the deaf is charming and wonderfully acted, if impossibly perfect. The girlfriend, who according to the main character, “saves his life,” is a perfect example of a poorly written female character. Despite seeing her father’s world, we really know very little about her outside her relationship with Riz’s character. The sound design is good, but it’s not exactly groundbreaking.
A terrible superhero movie. The script is so bad, it’s barely a movie. The special effects are mostly well done, but there’s so little story to support it that it’s flat. The acting is okay from most except for the lead, Dani. Her acting is so bad, it’s painful to watch. Did anyone screen-test her? Never mind the insult of yet another white orrson cast as an Indian in film. Just terrible. Also, her character’s power makes no sense.
The thing I love about the film is the same thing that makes it not a very good film. The voiceover, sung firs person narrative disregard from what is a pretty good picture. The film runs out of steam about 20 minutes before Yentl reveals herself an imposter, but it’s a smart movie and worth watching.
Great performances, except from Judd Hirsch who’s stiff and wooden, great story, and a sentimental script. Worth watching and better than I’d expected.
