They say don’t meet your heroes and this was a good example. Nikki was a phenomenal writer but after this, I’m not quite sure her politic resonates with me as much as her poetry does. I will say though, the documentary as a whole was well structured. Clear thesis and what not.
Short and sweet. A decent introduction to the role that Australian women played in WW II, feeding their troops. I could feel the dedication and solidarity that these women had, for their country and each other. However, I can’t find it in myself to sympathize with the injustice of low wages and lack of homage when the focus of this film seems to be primarily white women on stolen land.
As this is such a deeply important work, I don’t think it would be fair to rate it. I was so moved by the solidarity and unwavering commitment to dismantling (neo) colonialism. However, I was reminded of how much pain and injustice that Congo has suffered at the hands of imperialist and capitalist agendas. My heart breaks for Congo, today and tomorrow. I don’t want to forget. I want the music that I engage with, to be a reminder of…
“You don’t get to hate it unless you love it.” This was the first film to make me cry in a long time. There’s so much to be said about belonging- to a place, a people- and the dimensions of it, and this captured it beautifully.
I loved how the environmental injustice almost served as a metaphor on the toxicity of holding a place so dear, yet it still fighting back at you on a systemic level and (un)natural level.
So romantic, so emotional, so important!
