I went into the Super Mario Bros. Movie expecting a quarter-baked story marauded on both sides by incessant references to greater previously played versions of the world. Unsurprisingly, this did constitute the viewing experience for vast swathes of the film. I was, however, left pleasantly surprised by my enjoyment of the whole ridiculous fanfare.
