Overall this was pretty absurd and dark at times and just okay. The first part really frustrated me but it brought some more interesting stuff further in that wound me back in a little.

I didn’t really resonate with the emotions or connect to the themes that well. I do agree with other critiques that there are glaring omissions from the war and this film is not concerned with the reasoning behind even their own civil war.

Real small budget independent filmmaking here from Matt Johnson who I’m recently obsessed with. There’s something so likeable about him and the way he uses editing and forward thinking to get the narrative beats he wants. The movie is very meta and jumps the line between funny and dark constantly. It is amazing how something so grassroots and cheap can tell a compelling story and also be so layered.

This was some seriously unique stuff here, like art exhibit type levels of cinema. I think what’s also unique about it is it’s never trying to manufacture sadness from you, it’s always keeping you in the perspective of the nickel boys. Definitely not for everyone in how experimental and untraditional it is and with a dark subject matter.

Definitely one of the most unique and interesting films out of 2024, over time I think this score will slide up
