I think the scandal has infused people's perception of Emilia Perez. The film's ambition was its downfall. Awareness to trans issues with an unsympathetic protagonist AND taking on the cartels may have been too much to accomplish both, but it certainly wasn't the fail I expected with the low ratings. It is not the bomb others may have you believe.

Although I understand (i) why Kubrick used the zoom for emphasis and create movement where there is none, and ii) that Kubrick films always have the user seeing the director’s work,) the zoom did take me out of the picture each time it was used. It both added to and took away from my experience. Lyndon weaves period art, costumes, makeup, innovative candlelit scenes and great cinematography to tell its story. Some critics of the film complain it is slow.…
