“Get more out of life. See a fucked up movie”
John Waters
I will watch anything.
Oh yeah, Black Bag is terrific. LeCarre is updated for the 21st century with perfect casting, tight dialogue, some sly humour….and….well….yes - Cate Blanchett is still the single most attractive woman on the planet (apart from the gorgeous Kaz of course).
I read somewhere after watching the deplorable Presence that Soderbergh has become so good at making films that he needs to gamify the process to make it interesting. It seems the game includes reimagining Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy right down to Fassbender’s name and eyewear, and I’m fully onboard with that. This is peak grumpy old man cinema, fucking brilliant.
Until 2 days ago, I had no idea Jack Nicholson had a son. Now I've watched young Ray in back-to-back films, and I like him. He makes this villain so much more charismatic than the hero I wanted him to win. But that might just be an equal reaction to how utterly unappealing I find Jack Quaid and Amber Midthunder. Anyhow this flick is ok, weird premise but well well-executed, decent comedy relief buddy cops and some excellent very bloody fight choreography. Watchable despite Quaid's punchable face…….or maybe because it got punched so frequently.
From the opening frames, it's obvious why Armand won the Camera d’Or at Cannes. It's gorgeously shot, and the score is lovely and the performances are strong, it's a treat to watch. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a shred of believability in either the logical or emotional journey of the narrative, which undermines the film for me. And why were a couple of interpretative dances thrown in? Such a weird clash of styles. Overall, a very frustrating watch.
So this is my kind of casting, Kyle McLachlan, Christian Slater and Geena Davis for gods sake. And its terrifically put together, looks awesome, good performances. But the narrative is too slow, the tech billionaire lifestyle commercial takes up 3/4 of the film and when the kills finally start it’s trope-heavy, Tatum is caught monologuing ffs. I liked the finale though, an excellent simple twist. So overall, a solid entertaining flick, and definitely better with a crowd.
