The only Lynch I really liked when I was a teenager, railing against the nonsensical abstraction of his later work (and probably Ebert pilled). My take at the time was that this was a very cynical satire on smalltown traditional Americana. It still is to a degree, but as I get older I think I see his affection for the gee-whiz high school 50s promises of movies and media, even if he can't help but see all the darkness that surrounds it. Maybe this was clarified for me by Episode 8, but it feels much more alive now. He was always working through it.

Finally tackled the biggest blindspot in my Mann watching (still haven't seen The Keep and I'm in no rush to). I was reticent for so long because of all the other iterations I've seen and an ultra-80s take never interested me.

I was, of course, wrong, but it's odd to come at it backwards. The Ratner film is terrible, the Hopkins performance is a huge shadow over everything, and Harris' novels themselves (probably most enjoyably translated by the TV show)…

    Hoo boy.

Grotesque and inhumanly cynical but also stunning and effective. Veers from derivative to original in the space of a single scene. Perhaps the perfect presentation of a certain set of values, but blimey those values.
