Belladonna of Sadness 1973
This film perfectly embodies what I envisioned from a 70s Japanese psychedelic experience. While the overtly exploitative sexual themes, typical of that era, are hard to overlook and problematic—almost disturbingly so—there's a strange process where you grow somewhat accustomed to them, allowing space to appreciate the film’s visual poetry.
The ability to express such complex emotions through (almost) still images is a masterclass of animation. There is a kind of ectasy in this relationship to movement that is unique, visually, it’s a masterpiece, but a massive trigger warning is necessary...
