Fair play to all involved, I'm sure they were trying their best, but they spent years and years on this and the Priceline ad shown beforehand at the cinema had more emotional weight. Hate to see studios/filmmakers chasing their tails after fan reactions to trailers. Never seems to work.
By all accounts David Fincher is an intense, methodical, borderline tyrannical director. But could a gentle, lovely, amiable guy make films like him? Who knows. I suppose we’ll never find out, and when the standard is this good, who really minds? Zodiac is a frightening mystery and famously unsolved. The film is suitably scary but in a foreboding kind of way, and fits the story well. Creepier than most horror and no catharsis. Like real life.

I'm a massive fan of the TV series (my friends call me Will), so I was probably already going to love this no matter what, but not many TV series make the jump from small screen to big. The Inbetweeners makes it look easy though, creating a film that could easily have been just a overlong episode (which it sort of is still, but there's more plot and character development). My last name is Gilroy, I'm a filmmaker, this is a pretty good movie. Basically what I'm saying is I think Dan Gilroy is my uncle and he should give me a job.
Desperate pleas for work aside, this is a super debut from uncle Dan and another chilling performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. His performance of Lou Bloom recalls previous screen creeps (including some he's played himself) and luckily it's strong enough to compare. And it is lucky because this…
