There’s some great formal ideas and extremely harrowing imagery here. It’s all deliberately apolitical (the state alliances make no sense in the context of real world politics, nobody refers to the president by name), which itself isn’t an issue if the film tried to stay in a more abstract lane for its entire runtime. But the cute musical interludes, the montages, all of it screams tongue-in-cheek in a weird James Gunn sort of way that just doesn’t work in this…
