Story of a man being broken down and built up just to be broken down again. Incredible, elaborate sets. Portrayal of a tortured artist in a very different sense, a holocaust survivor is given a chance to continue his lifelong artistic expression but only within in the complex power dynamics that emerge from conflict with those who fund his work and social prejudices against his Jewishness. Earned its length for the most part - the interval helped a lot in this regard. In conclusion, more long movies should have intervals.
By far Taika Watitis most disappointing work. It poorly attempts to match ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ in its wit and self reflective humour. The pacing of this movie was its worst quality, and it’s perhaps exclusively carried by the brilliance of the black and white scene in the middle of the film.
