bizarre and fun

Watched after reading Benjamín Labatut's "The MANIAC."
There is something incredibly ghoulish about watching the computer scientists and engineers who designed AlphaGo react with such giddy excitement as their machine is utterly crushing the spirit of one of the world's greatest Go players, a individual who has spent their entire life completely dedicated to the craft, creativity, and art of their chosen game. It's as if the development team had been so focused on asking how they should accomplish this…
Good performances from Maguire and Caine (would have liked to have seen Caine get more screentime) but...this script neutered pretty much all of the most interesting and creative parts of the original story. It's as if they deliberately set about taking any of the novel's themes or characters that had any capacity to provoke a thought in the audience and pressed them straight through the Hallmarkification machine.
