a candid and non sugar-coated glimpse into the barbarity committed in Vietnam by america. It doesn’t use any narration, letting a series of interviews and raw footage speak for itself, especially by juxtaposing spurious statements by US military and politicians with brutal on the ground footage in Vietnam. It is crazy that this came out in 1974 before the war was officially even over. Overall, the film is not a comprehensive history of the war but it serves its purpose…

American Movie 1999
This is such a special movie, I have never seen anything remotely like it. To me, the point of this movie was that “the American Dream” isn’t about its actual plausibility but rather just about the chase of the idea of the American Dream. It doesn’t matter that everyone knew (Mark himself included, perhaps) Mark was never going to “make it big” with his filmmaking, it’s the mere fact that he insisted on trying against all odds, with an absolutely indefatigable…

Mulholland Drive 2001

So stunned that I don’t even feel like writing about this. This is just clearly an artistic high of emotion and capturing the human condition and subjectivity, delusion, dreams, etc, that very few directors/artists ever achieve! the meta commentary on the nature of fiction/movies/our own realities that we construct for ourselves. The only thing I’ve ever seen that is comparable is Persona. I was so perplexed by this after watching that i didn’t even know what to think, was considering not rating it, but fuck it after some discussion with friends this deserves 5 stars for sure

Punch-Drunk Love 2002
Very enjoyable and funny to watch in theaters with a crowd, can’t believe it’s only like 90 minutes. The desire/expectation (from the audience/me) to see Sandler smash up Philip Seymour Hoffman’s store windows is so large and then the rug is pulled out because he’s now drunk on LOVE instead of loneliness and frustration, genius

The Grab 2022
gonna write a very long and mildly annoyed political rant lol, so tune out now if you please.
this is an interesting piece of original investigative journalism, attempting to tackle very large questions on global geopolitics and political economy. The investigative reporting was fine enough; it’s good to “follow the money,” exposing odious actors and financial interests who are grabbing up land and water, displacing people and depriving them of the resources they need for survival. This is obviously bad,…Translated from by -
Megalopolis 2024
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I don’t understand the criticism about incoherency really, I think the main story/theme of “What Is To Be Done?” in the midst of a dying empire is pretty clear, as the movie repeatedly directly compares the late Ancient Roman Empire to America. The movie is confusing and filled with spectacle and and absurdity for sure, but that is on purpose and is reflective of the nonsensical times we live in, with our nonstop indulgence in “bread and circuses” to keep…
