    This movie is slow and sad, but I’d forgotten just how slow and sad. It is necessary to have  a working understanding plot of the TV show to get anything from the movie.

    The Man From Another Place refers to himself as “The Arm”, which is a thing I hadn’t remembered from the movie or original run of the show, so I guess it’s nice to know that he was in The Return in some form or fashion.

    What if The Simpsons were still special? What if instead of 30 years of them ad nauseum, all of what made them good were concentrated into a two hour movie (not the one we got, I’m imagining a world where they had no show, just one movie, please follow along)? Imagine how special we would still think they were, the high regard we would still hold them in. That is essentially what My Neighbors the Yamadas is.

    What a strange concert to film and then sell. Paul does some truly deranged things here including: petting an invisible cat during “An Cat Dubh”, petting Adam Clayton also during “An Cat Dubh”, singing “Into the Heart” to a literal child, singing a line from The Smashing Pumpkins’ “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” and getting it ever so slightly wrong, and crawling around the stage (not during Zoo Station, which could have been somewhat appropriate). The man at one point apologizes…
