It was shot beautifully, and it was cast impeccably- maybe with the exception of Nicholas Hoult. I enjoyed the ways that Eggers really leant into traits and themes associated with the Gothic literary genre- omens, paracelsus and agrippa as a nod to a prior and foregone dirty/tabboo science, bad and unrestful dreams, decay, superstitions, etc. I loved the depictions of a brutal and unwavering nature with the sort of typical Romantic influences on the Gothic genre. Watching the film felt a lot like reading classic Gothic literature- Frankenstein, Vampyre, etc.
