  The ‘Covid film’ will surely be a whole field of study within film scholarship in years to come (perhaps it already is) and I think this is one of the most interesting examples, not just because of the circumstances of its making and how that affects the mise en scène but because its approach to time, space, selfhood and memory captures the mood of that period so well.   Surprised this wasn’t a bigger part of the conversation when Garland’s Civil War came out. It’s at least *as good* as that film in almost every way, with 1% of the budget!

  “We never really get to know any of the characters, which is a problem in a story defined by its personal politics. When Cécile comes to detest Anne, we don’t have much of an inclination as to why, the final act hinging on a conflict that has barely taken root.”
