Was looking for a steampunk movie and reddit sent me here. Director of Akira, big production that took 10 years to complete, felt like good enough reasons. It starts well: good plot, good context, some fancy animation techniques I hadn't seen before in anime such as circular pans and tilts. And the whole victorian steam tech lore was very promosing. Apparently Miles Davis was living in Paris because of his romance with Juliette Gréco, when he met 26 yo Louis Malle via a friend in common. After Malle pitched the idea to Miles, he showed up a couple days later with his pick-up quintet at the editing room, and improvised one of the greatest musical scores in cinema to this day.
