I am very conflicted about this film. It looks fantastic—cinematography, production design, makeup, costuming, etc are all stellar— and the performances are great (particularly the two leads). However I feel like there’s nothing about the story that’s particularly surprising. I suppose simplicity in plot is to be expected for a nonfiction story—you can only stretch the plot so far outside the bounds of the factual events— but I think you need to make up for that simplicity with complexity elsewhere,…
