After hearing about how impactful this film was for my father when it first came out, I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, or if it would live up to its lore. But I have to say it was surprising for me in all the best ways.
Action and Adventure film, meets unlikely romance, meets Commedia dell'Arte. It is created like a classic theatrical piece, not only in the way that it begins with a deliciously long take of Wilhelmenia…

What an incredibly poignant film. I’ve never seen the experience of a teenage girl captured so perfectly, nor in an environment with such verisimilitude.
The context of a harsh British realism backdrop creates a perfectly believable catalyst for such a vulnerable, yet volatile main character.
While watching her react to the world around her with the worst behaviour, close framings to her face allow us to see the innocence in her eyes.
It is a brutally transcendent film, with a classic Andrea Arnold conclusion.

Disturbing, yet funny. Morbid, yet heartwarming. A film of contradictions and the most amazing set design of our generation. This film hit everything right for me; cinematography (like that 4mm lens, what!), script (Tony McNamara nails it again), production design, acting, sound, soundtrack… it left me feeling inspired to investigate my own brand of wacky.

Mystical. Strange. Warmth of family love. Told primarily through the traditional oral storytelling traditions of Ireland. Sweet and beautiful.
