In the past, trends in cinema have romanticised drug addiction, dehumanised their subjects and taken very little effort to understand and empathise with the reality of the addict's world. Often these films can be seen exploiting these situations for cheap audience provocation or shock value; alienating the addict as opposed to relating to them and attempting to understand the causes of their struggle.
