A Robert Eggers tall tale, one that sailors might once have told in a dark and muggy tavern with a frothy tankard of ale in hand, holding a faraway look in their eyes. It is a tall tale rooted in tradition, grim and sinister, with beautiful contrasting visuals in black and white 35mm film.
At times, it leaves you speechless, as if you’re descending into madness alongside the two lighthouse keepers, yet surrendering to its strangeness reveals an eerie enchantment within its light.
The vocabulary and language is another highlight, some favourites include “swab dog”, “why’d y’spill yer beans?”, and “bad luck to kill a seabird.”
