Never really cared for this movie, but I appreciated it a little more this time around. The Superman origin is done well. Marlon Brando phones in his performance but gives some effortless gravitas to his role that I always appreciated. It feels like this movie is divided into thirds that don’t really fit all that well together. Visually this is all very flat and uninspired. Besides the special effects, they’re dated but fun. Ouija: Origin of Evil 2016
Flanagan takes a generic Blumhouse ghost movie and elevates it with well written characters, and a few really standout scenes. Henry Thomas is great in this as the priest and the last third of the movie where he becomes a more prominent character is all pretty great. Far from my favorite Flanagan, some of the scares are a little generic. But he’s always been more character driven anyway.

The Wild Robot 2024
Sweet movie with great animation. But with the hype this got I couldn’t help but feel like I was missing something. The emotional beats all seemed a little rushed and unearned, and like it was more interesting in moving on to the next narrative thread. Didn’t really work for me like it wanted to or like it did for so many people. Still pretty solid though.

The Holdovers 2023
A perfect holiday feel good movie. A nice little character study where all the big emotional punches are earned. Well written and great performances across the board. And subtly great filmmaking that never oversteps. Very much deserving to be a new classic in the holiday movie rotation.
