There’s a bit of corniness that comes with the family Christmas film territory — but that aside, this is about as good as it gets. Expertly structured and paced, hilarious and memorable characters, tones of great lines, beautiful sets and well shot, all while capturing the highs and lows of big family Christmases through the lens of a child navigating the chaos. This is also John Williams at his very best. Home Alone is the best Christmas film.
While some characterisation is a little dated, this is an incredible piece of storytelling with brilliant performances across the entire cast. One of Russell Crowe’s best. One of my favourite films. And it has a great score too.
First half of the film feels a bit scattered and all over the place, but the second half pulls things together somewhat and builds to quite a gripping finale. Denzel Washington is very good.

Had potential to better the original film in the first half, but lost its way in the second half when the main character undergoes a shift in perspective that’s about as believable as sharks in the Coliseum. Ending also lacks subtlety and is a bit corny.
