Clever plotting in the first 20-30 minutes, but overall was not a fan. JK Simmons was incredible, perhaps the most interesting thing about this cumbersome movie, although I’d like to have a word with the costumer about that straw “retired guy” fedora. After he disappears so early in the movie, he stays gone, which seems to me like a missed opportunity. A real disservice that we didn’t see Toni Collette’s character more developed. No sense of her interiority in this…
“Mid.” Some good ideas and memorable characterizations. Would be more interesting if it confronted its own desperation head-on. Instead, it hides behind the few same jokes again and again. Aims for an enchanted midsummer night and instead achieves something more like a miasmatic cynicism.
After watching this movie I am more grateful for the work of Radu Jude. His most recent film seems miles ahead of “Rumours.” Although it works in a different context, it addresses somewhat similar issues, and therefore seems all the more necessary.

The last 20 minutes make me unwell, have always made me feel unwell. We spend so much time in that damn house. In the end, despite all the blood and carnage, it doesn’t seem ravaged or transformed, just crowded and stale. And the villains express the limited range and melodrama of high school actors, howling out their lines. Perhaps my least favorite ending of any movie! Ever! I need a snack.
