  The Substance, as with many other body horror films, has a way of confronting the audience with the fact that humans are beneath it all: Meat. Meat is decidedly unsexy; see: Dennis Quaid eating shrimp. This kind of bodily depersonalisation has clear thematic connotations: society treats human bodies as consumable and disposable. We valorise youth and beauty and look upon age and decay with disgust.
