Arguably one of the most unsettling motifs employed in horror films is the distortion of the familiar, the comfortable. With Light is Waiting, Michael Robinson displays a clear understanding of this concept. He sends the viewer on a downward spiral to the grotesque depths of video hell. A number of techniques are utilized to achieve such a brilliant level of abhorrence.

The Invitation 2015
The Invitation may not push boundaries, but it does a damn good job of flipping a simple concept (house invasion horror/thrillers) on its head. It manages to feel refreshing amongst a sea of fairly underwhelming modern horror movies. Nearly every scene exists to build up more and more tension, eventually reaching an explosive fever pitch. In the meantime, some great dialogue and a handful of flashbacks help to flesh out the characters. When the shit inevitably hits the fan, you actually care about what happens to them as a result.

Before Midnight 2013
Before Midnight is one of the most truthful and realistic portrayals of a couple ever to be written for a film. While it's not required that you watch the previous two films in the trilogy, doing so will undoubtedly enhance the on-screen relationship between Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy for you. The organic, believable nature of their characters is unmatched in the romance genre. Midnight provides a satisfying conclusion to the brilliant "Before" trilogy; a must-see for anyone who loves the kind of film that's emotional impact is felt well after the credits roll.

Children of Men 2006
Years after my initial viewing, I decided to revisit Children of Men and I'm beyond glad I did so. Upon rewatching it, the film buried itself deep into my conscience and has yet to leave. The absolutely genius story of one child-bearing woman in a world plagued by infertility is held up by real characters, absurdly great cinematography, and an overall flair that only Alfonso Cuarón could achieve. The attention to detail is what takes the movie to another level…
