Damn, few things have hit me this strong emotionally in a while - the weight of the film came through in every wordless moment. I found it a raw, vulnerable watch capturing the interiors of masculinity, innocence and grief with the most gentle gaze. So here I am face full of tears on a Sunday evening
What struck me most was how the film remained so firmly focused on family dynamics through and through. It is from this remarkable vantage point where one observes the slow, insidious effects of the system on the father and sees, this is why (and how) politics matters.
The last part of the film was dramatised for thematic effect - while some suggest this compromised the authenticity of the father character, I do not see that as a shortcoming. For me…
so heartwarming and so heartbreaking - it captured something so purely human and raw and delicate that exists beyond categorisation. wonderful acting by sakura ando.
two hours later, still completely unknown… can’t tell if coming in blank about Bob Dylan helped or undermined but I did not get half an inch closer to understanding the artist. if that was the point of the movie, what was the point??? “cool story bro” kinda film
