  For its genre, 12YaS is beautifully crafted. But it raises the question whether these kind of movies need to exist for people to finally empathise. For its length, it’s quite one dimensional, scenes of abuse that don’t support the narrative, but feed on shock value. A biopic shan’t tell only one part of a persons life, there’s so much more to black history than slavery. Why not focus on Solomon's achievements after these events?
