The Dreamers 2003
The first time I watched this film, all I saw was the beautifully packaged erotic-drama of three conventionally attractive and pretentious cinephiles who re-enact classic masterpieces on the regular - but apart from the lulling aesthetic I couldn’t really see the point.
Rewatching it now during a pandemic, I suddenly see what Bertolucci was trying to evoke beyond his love for cinema. Set in the backdrop of civil unrest in 1960s France but paralleling to today, the main characters are…Translated from by -
Perfect Blue 1997
A disorientating film about an actress who’s sense of identity starts to disintegrate after being coerced into filming a disturbing rape scene. The animation style captures the hallucinatory repetitiveness of her life as fiction threatens to become reality, making the viewers question the perspective of the story. Satoshi Kon’s intricate social satire explores the consequences of issues that seem more relevant today than it was when it was first released. The film critiques the predatory male gaze in mass media and the exploitation of women in the entertainment industry through the horrific events that unfold.

Joker 2019
The plot is fairly straightforward, it follows a man suffering from deep psychological trauma and his descent into madness, but the film has depth that is not acknowledged by the articles and blogs that condemn it. The highlight of the movie is without a doubt, Joaquin Phoenix’s exploitative and almost provocative performance. He demands your attention and forces you to keep watching. You feel disgusted with yourself because despite recognising the evil of Arthur’s actions, you still sympathise with him…

They Live 1988
This film is everything you expect in a low-budget sci-fi 80s film, it’s superficial and silly, but you can still get a good laugh from the poor acting and nonsensical dialogue. It’s clearly not Carpenter’s best, but the film’s subtext is what brings people back to rewatch it today. Seeing this in 2019, it’s scary to see how a cheesy film made 30 years ago deals with issues that are still relevant today. The social commentary isn’t subtle, pushing poverty, exploitation, consumer culture and capitalism right into the audience’s face.
