  As the second HTTYD was phenomenal, I had high hopes for this one. What a shame. The story is rushed and without proper direction or theme. The characters are treated without respect to anything previously established about them (Hiccup in particular). Snotlout hitting on Hiccup's mom is just creepy. The dragon stuff is forced and unimaginative. The whole thing is just heteronormative bullshit with a dim view of humanity. If you do get emotional at the end of this movie, it's purely due to nostalgia. Goodbyes are always bittersweet, but this one just felt contrived. Overall a sloppy film and a major disappointment.

  I'm genuinely impressed at how cleverly they managed to keep politics out of this. And I'll probably always be conflicted about whether I like that or not.

  On one hand, this is a very real exploration of the horrors of war and photojournalism. It doesn't get caught up in being preachy. Not giving the viewer a chance to take "sides" means that all violence is simply an atrocity, with no room for victory.
