Yeah I’m a Marvel shill, yeah I’m gonna watch every movie and almost every show they put out. I’ve made my peace with being a consumer. However, this movie ultimately didn’t really stand up to a lot of scrutiny. All the actors did fine, the characters were alright. The plot was really not much of anything. I followed along easy enough but I had a hard time really caring about anything that happened. CGI dumb world, almost nonexistent minor characters,…
Rarely do I enjoy war movies, but this was an exception. Of course, it helps that it’s adapted from one of the most celebrated novels of the 20th century. Haunting and beautiful, and yet visceral, covered in mud and blood. The score is excellent, both sparse in moments of tension and action and richly romantic in the more sentimental scenes. I don’t speak German but from what I could tell, the acting was all around spot-on. Overall, a near-perfect anti-war war film.
My first thought after the credits rolled was “this movie is just vibes, and that rules.” A lot of movies have attempted to capture the essence of being a teenager in America, and few do it as well as this movie. The only other movie I can think of that resonates with me is Superbad, which is kind of an updated Dazed and Confused for Millenials and Gen Z.
