I think it's really hard for me to evaluate this film from a more "objective" point of view (if that is even possible. I am invested by virtue of the film's plot, setting, and direction.
BUT, I will say that it's a stunning debut that hits all the right notes visually, stylistically, and emotionally. More than anything, the film conveys that late 19th century rural Vietnam is both a brutal and beautiful place. I expected to be moved, and I was moved.
Kind of shock to watch this after watching WR: Mysteries of the Organism. Surprisingly tender and beautiful, with some amazing visual images that have a pretty painterly quality (given what I have seen from Makavejev thus far, but also painful.)
