Some moments (very few) were exciting, most were dull. I didn’t mind the political/environmental commentary. I don’t understand how he went from Parasite to this, but Pattinson and Ackie especially were phenomenal.

Costumes amazing. Songs were thrilling. Genuinely felt sick to my stomach when they were talking about the oppression of Animals and how eerily relevant and similar that entire idea is to current US politics. Glinda was so (morally) gray for how often she was dressed in shades of pink. Elphaba also an interesting, stalwart rebel. Excited to see where things progress in Part 2, especially for these two characters. Who knew the lore of Oz was so profound!

Is it bad to say I’m underwhelmed? Bits and pieces worked very well, Lily Rose Depp and (naturally)  Willem Dafoe’s performances, Count Orlok’s voice, the editing and cinematography. Other things didn’t. I thought the mustache was goofy, I did not care about what happened to Ellen’s friends. I don’t know…Eggers has done the whole “succumbing to a terrible demon and thus insanity” thing better in The Witch and The Lighthouse. This is just that but on a larger, less satisfying scale.

The aesthetic is rock solid but the overall story is pretty disjointed and a little vague
