This one gets better every time I watch it. The acting is wonderful, natural, emotional, raw. The script is crazy dark, and takes huge swings, but pulls them off excellently. When this first came out, I thought “really? ANOTHER Christmas Carol adaptation?” But this one actually has something new to say, a completely different take on the story. Worth a watch year after year, if you can handle it!

Ugh, the story itself was so good, but it was ruined by the poorly written dialogue. When I describe the plot points of the movie, it’s very complex and riveting. But the dialogue is so cheesy that it’s hard to take the characters seriously a lot of the time. The acting was good, could have been better. I will say that the movie made me wish I had read the book, because I wanted to see a good execution of the story. But if I was Suzanne Collins, I don’t think I’d be super pleased with this movie.

Timmy, you’ve let me down. Your normal standard of excellence in performances was thrown out the window here. Comes across as a pure money grab, because you were really phoning it in. We have no idea where Willy came from, nor where the story takes place, as everyone has different accents. His mom is dead, of course, though we are…

The most basic rule of screenwriting is that your main character must have a goal. She must be pursuing that goal in every single scene. This rule was completely disregarded in Licorice Pizza. Not only does Alana not have a driving force behind her character, she’s not likable in the least. Am I supposed to be rooting for the annoying pedophile? You cannot make a movie based on a warm color palette and 70s nostalgia alone.
