Magnolia 1999
Twenty six years later, Magnolia is still a masterpiece. Maybe a little overwrought but it feels like an ocean of catharsis. A roving camera and propulsive score lets the hours bleed away as we watch one fateful day for many, many people. Beautiful performances, elegant writing and directing. Jim and Claudia’s arc is so so so romantic and beautiful. Tom Cruise deserved an Oscar for that deathbed scene. He has never been better. It is PTA’s best. His 90’s swan song and that anamorphic glisten shines.

The Blob 1988
I love that The Blob remake feels apocalyptic. The perfect popcorn movie for the mean spirited folks in the audience. It’s a clear case of hiring horror fans to make a horror movie so clearly with love and passion. Frank Darabont and Chuck Russell should have collaborated more than twice (NOES 3: Dream Warriors is their other perfect movie). You should at minimum watch The Blob once a year at summertime. Plus any movie with a Friday the 13th ripoff always makes me happy. “Ribbed!”
