    Paul Thomas Anderson Retrospective

Hard Eight was adapted by Paul Thomas Anderson from his short film Cigarettes & Coffee (1993), which earned him attention at the Sundance Film Festival. It is a restrained entry into the neo-noir genre, setting the foundation for the sprawling, emotionally charged character studies that would define his later work. Phillip Baker Hall‘s calm gravitas anchors the film and his unknown motivation for taking John under his wing gives the film an undercurrent of mystery and unease.

Conclave is a masterful exploration of the tension between tradition and change in modern times. The Church is depicted as both a timeless institution with rituals and one deeply shaken by the ever-changing values of contemporary society. It’s little things that feel odd seeing or hearing in relation to the christian church: the typing on a computer, the expensive coffee machine summing while brewing or a cardinal hitting a vape.

This shifting identity is embodied by the various cardinals and…

I love Wong Kar-wai‘s characters and their voice-overs, because they‘re always bizarre and likeable even if their actions are immoral. They‘re always contemplating their behavior and somehow expired pineapples are at the root of it.

Another thing is his brave cinematography that doesn‘t shy away from confusing the viewer if it means that it looks cool and dreamy. The neon colors of Hong Kong look so damn beautiful here and made me nostalgic for the few days that I spent there.

For my third installment of Eat What You Watch I made Hawaiian Aloha Burger and to my surprise I liked it a lot. I thought the pineapple would ruin the burger, but it was a nice complimentary flavor. I don’t know if I would have a burger for breakfast though…

I bow to Robert De Niro. This is truly his best performance and might be the best performance in a movie I've ever seen. Awakenings tells a captivating story with likeable characters. Only a few movies work without a bad guy. Here everybody is trying their best to help everyone.

I prefer Bong Joon-Ho films when they‘re in his native language because his writing feels way more nuanced. Here the humor and social commentary is very on the nose and spells it out for you. It kinda feels like a diluted version. I don’t know, I had the same problem with Okja.

Anyways, Mickey 17 is still a film that feels different to the usual Sci-Fi comedies that Hollywood churns out with the class commentary and whacky characters. Robert Pattinson tries out a new weird accent and Mark Ruffalo has a lot of fun with his Donald Trump impression.
