feels like the emotional weight of this movie relies too much on humanizing fat and gay people, which, if you already see them as “real” people, doesn’t really pay off imo. ultimately his backstory explaining his sexuality and weight gain fall flat and the ending is just silly af. but, I’m a sucker for sad porn and yes I cried.

I feel like I got what this movie was trying to achieve and wanted to like it but it just feels like Lena is Pretty and Sweet and somehow privy to Barry’s trauma and anxieties despite just meeting him. Instead of being fleshed out as a real person w believable motivations, she’s written in out of thin air as a mere tool used to make Barry seem like less of pathetic character and I’m sorry but I don’t buy it
