I left the theater with no strong feelings, just a mild disappointment. Despite the many deaths that occur, all of them fall flat in a way that seems intentional but also leaves you unattached to everyone, including our final girl. Some of the dialogue also landed in the ‘gotcha’ category of corny one liners that’s meant to perceived as snarky and cool but just comes off as obnoxious. The plot could’ve used some work and I was pretty disappointed by the disjointed/awkward ending. The subpar plot paired with the classic sexism of its time really left me… unimpressed. But, I will give it some points for cinematography. There were some fun shots especially when Jody walked through the mausoleum the first time -great use of lighting
Uncomfortable angles and a melancholic yet menacing score create the perfect accents to this coming of age story, which masterfully captured the awkward reality of a sexual awakening. An awkwardness beautifully paired with a good balance of grotesque body horror. In terms of the music, Jim William's incredibly moody main title theme may be one of my all time favorites. All around pleasantly surprised my this novel take on 'vampires'.
The amount of detail placed into each frame is awe-inspiring and demonstrates how much of an act of love this movie is. There is a similar admiration for natural design, as in Nausicaa, that shows itself in the form of mechanics throughout this film. Both piscatorial and avian, air ships move with a natural flow that feels so familiar, yet deeply alien.
