Before Sunset 2004
from the first scene to the last, my heart is thudding in my chest so hard it’s hitting the couch behind me. how does it get me so dead center every time? i am 30 now and julie delpy pouring her heart out the backseat of the car— it feels like she’s read my diary, like yesterday. i’m struck by how grounded this film is in a specific time and political moment (2003, yikes), but through meandering conversation these characters escape…

I'm Not a Robot 2023
saw this on kanopy and was enticed. what a mysterious and engrossing watch. i adore the warmth, colors, and quietude of the cinematography. i found myself flip-flopping on my moral stance a few times, trying to find my way through this strange world. i enjoy when a story isn’t anchored in a specific time— it makes me feel a little safer. kind of in the way that severance seems contemporary but also doesn’t, because of all the 90s technology. in this…

Godzilla Minus One 2023
i was blown away by this movie from the first five minutes. the sound scared the crap out of me. godzilla is a clear stand-in for the atomic bomb, and the destruction wrought by the creature is so visceral and apocalyptic that it makes oppenheimer look like a fireworks show. there’s a specific shot where radio journalists are reporting from the top of a crumbling building, and the camera puts you on the roof as it falls forward onto the…
