Pearl 2022
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I'll have to watch the rest of the trilogy to make a fair assessment but I didn't find it to be satisfying. The character development could have been stronger. I understand the choices to make things subtle but overdramatic. However as someone who has autism and ADHD I might have overlooked some of the clues as to why Pearl was so unhappy and repressed. I think putting in how long she's suffered and then the confusion of how her father…

M3GAN 2022
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Fairly predictable plotline. I'm more interested in seeing what M3GAN can do to help the world versus just the same tired trope of a female character turning feral and murdering everyone. Obviously she's a robot and we're dealing with AI, but it's just entertaining. It's giving Chucky vibes updated for the present. Also why does every child have to be an orphan these days? Honestly the only surprising thing was that M3GAN can drive.

Barbie 2023
This movie is beautiful and powerful. It makes sense to be the one that brought audiences back to the movies. Feel good movies are cultural moments in the zeitgeist. I didn't expect to be impressed but it's the happiness that gets you. You want to come away from the film as happy and positive as Barbie. However real life obviously does not work like movie logic. It's a fun watch with some philosophy baked in and social commentary but little that will actually change society as a whole. Pure entertainment is back.

The Boy and the Heron 2023
Hayao Miyazaki is trying to make one last film and talk to his fans about his legacy. This guy really knows how to world build and transform audiences to fantasy places that probably exist in his dreams. The film is highly autobiographical for obvious reasons. It makes me wonder as to what he has left unsaid though. The way he weaves the magical and reality together is brilliant. It's a smorgasbord of jumping around different places and characters on a journey that resembles how our dream life is like. It doesn't have to make sense. It's art of the best kind.
