  I’m not sure this movie can be reviewed in the modern context. The recent emphasis on quiet moments and slick perfectionism wouldn’t know what to do with a film this lively and inventive.

  But you and your friends should watch it instead of rewatching the Rocky Horror Picture Show this year.

  It’s Denzel’s training day as he crosses wits and one-liners with a rock solid supporting cast.

  Themes of power and the fragility thereof. 

  Perhaps indulgent in it’s epilogue, but the preceding 2 hours are served so crisp and effectively paced that you appreciate the deceleration.

  New York as a setting for a genre film is always welcome.

  I’m going to read the less favourable reviews in a minute but let’s make a few things clear about this film:

  -It has the appropriate amount of nudity for a film about a new romance
  -There’s no improving on the leads
  -The supporting cast slaps
  -The crisis is plausible
  -The climax is plausible (x2)
  -There’s even a few little in-media moments of a film with a film

  So I don’t know what you’re looking for in a Rom Com but I submit these are all the boxes and it checks them.
