    The Electric State

A three hundred million dollar bloated, soulless, unfunny, poorly written example of movie-making excess. Three hundred million dollars. You could make 30 Godzilla Minus Ones with that budget (and how wonderful would that be). A monumental waste.

    Twisters

    ★★

Poorly written (very), overlong and tired rehash of the much better Twister ('96). Virtually the exact same plot and character types as its predecessor -- what's missing is the charm of Paxton and Hunt, a thrilling score and an overall giddy exuberance. Even the '96 special effects seem better. Absolutely no reason for this film to exist.

One experiences a giddy exhaustion after watching this film. So much witty Wilder/Diamond dialogue, so much winking at the audience, so much movement, so much dead-on satire that it's impossible to absorb it all after just one viewing. Cagney is masterful. He is in total command of the film right from the start and as it barrels toward the frenzied climax, he shines like an exploding star. And Arlene Francis! Dear God, how did she not do more movies? She is a scene stealer extraordinaire. One: watch this movie! Two: watch this movie! Three: WATCH THIS MOVIE!

What starts out as a retread of its classic predecessor, Beneath quickly proves to be an entertaining follow-up. The plot involves telepathic, ICBM worshipping mutants that live underneath the planet and their eventual confrontation with the militant apes on the surface. It's all a bit bonkers but it works -- as does the not-so-subtle social commentary on the conflict in Vietnam and the threat of nuclear war (contemporary concerns when the film was made). Cornelius, Zira, Zaius and Taylor all…
