For me, the film tried to be too clever for its own good. Yes, the themes it touched upon were honourable: the ogling of, and drooling over, the female body; the standardisation of female beauty; the cosmetics industry, even; but in smashing your head with a blood soaked bludgeon over and over again, those very themes rang more and more hollow as the long 2h 20 drained my initial curiosity and enthusiasm.
Perhaps the experience would have been more fun…
Absurd, funny and a little bit meta (and thankfully not too much!). Enjoyed it without having to break a sweat.
All We Imagine As Light gave me the feeling of a more intimate, delicate side to the Mumbai I have both seen in film and experienced myself. The tight shots within the small spaces of the apartment or hospital rooms or train carriages contributed to a unique feeling of fully being immersed into the world Kapadia so expertly crafted together with the characters. Stunning film. Both visually and in the storytelling. The pace of the story seemingly reflected the pace of life on the island: slow yet deliberate. There was space to breathe in every shot and I never felt rushed. The dialogue was minimal; and I’m glad that was the case, as every sentence had meaning to it.
