the performances are excellent, it looks really beautiful, there's good scares, and the music works for me (mostly).
buuut.... Alex Garland really shoots himself in the foot by making a movie that un-anchors itself from reality to express themes that don't really land. the observations about patriarchy, abuse, or grief are hammered away at so bluntly that after the first half, it feels like it's all been said. and once you get the messaging, there's no literal plot to hold your interest, just more theme, more metaphor, more ambient wailing.
definitely not Alex garlands best.
