It’s odd to feel a sense of comfort watching a movie about death. People would usually react aversively whenever death is discussed because we fear what would happen when that time comes. Lifted from stories about death in Thai newspapers, this film shows us that death is inevitable - it will come one day and while there’s nothing that can prepare you when it comes, it shouldn’t hinder you from living as well. Without showing how these deaths happen, we…

The thing about Nawapol’s films is how he’s able to make his characters so relatable that sometimes you feel that the movie was written based on your own life experiences. I think few directors can have that magic of transporting their viewers into the shoes of their characters so effortlessly. Here we see Yoon, a career-driven freelancer who prioritizes his work above all else, even if it costs his sanity and health, and Im, armed with a good heart and…

Bong Joon-ho went crazy after winning an Oscar for Parasite, but in a good way. I didn’t expect to be mindfucked like in Parasite, but still enjoyed the spectacle of it. I’ve yet to watch most of Bong’s films, but this reminded me of Okja — more in-your-face with the absurdity of it. There’s no denying that Robert Pattinson is an amazing actor, but his range is just mind-blowing. He was so fun to watch in this that it renewed my circa 2008 admiration of him.

Watching films like this makes my heart really heavy because all of this was real. There are people out there that are still fighting for answers and justice against a cruel regime. Chronicling the lives of the Paiva family during Brazil’s military dictatorship, I’m Still Here stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Fernanda Torres as Eunice was spectacular, depicting a mother navigating the challenges of raising her family while seeking answers about her husband’s disappearance with such power and restraint.

I really liked how this short was able to capture the innocence of having your first kiss and the longing that comes after it. Such a tender, bittersweet moment that made me remember my own experience.

    Japanuary 2025 #1: Jūzō Itami

What a great way to start the year!

My first Jūzō Itami and this made me excited to dig deep into his filmography. At its core, Tampopo is a heartwarming story about fulfilling an ultimate dream while highlighting food as a means to connect people across different aspects of life.

The film was able to blend different genres well, and I enjoyed the pace it was going. It offered a unique mix of humor, sensuality,…
