In preparation for On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, Rungano Nyoni's sophomore film effort, I recently watched (and loved!) her debut film, I Am Not a Witch. This later work enhances everything I enjoyed about her first film, taking it up a notch.
While it may not appeal to everyone, it’s a strange film that, just like her first, walks a tightrope between darkness and humor. On Becoming a Guinea Fowl also navigates the space between perception and imagination. The world is not turned completely…
When stepping into a new chapter, a new beginning, a series rewatch of Twin Peaks is obviously crucial.
I remember when I was a kid and my mom ordered this off Columbia House Video Club. Shit changed my life and made me obsessed with how movies could make you feel. Today I got to see this on the big screen, just down the street from where I first popped that videotape in all those years ago…I think that’s pretty cool.
At first I thought my favorite thing about Nope was how Peele frames Kaluuyah as cinema’s resurrected black cowboy. Then I traded that for how well the movie masters its atmosphere, score and use of locations. At the time of this review, it’s now Jupe being so fucked by his own traumatic childhood that he uses the SNL skit that parodied it as his own perspective. Nope does many things very well but how it denounces spectacle by portraying it as an empty circus is perhaps what it does best.
This is prime rewatch material, baby! Will be overthinking this one much more in the near future.
